CANTON — An Arkansas man suspected of murdering the mother of his children died in an officer-involved shooting at an interstate motel here on Saturday.

The fugitive, who has not been identified, was killed after a three-hour standoff with law enforcement, Madison County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Heath Hall said.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Capt. Johnny Poulos said the MBI is conducting the investigation and that no other information including the identity of the victim is currently available.

Hall said law enforcement responded to a call at the Relax Inn, 123 Sidney Runnels Dr., near the Pizza Hut off of west Peace Street around 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17.

He said man wanted for killing the mother of his children in Jonesboro, Arkansas, had barricaded himself in a room.

Hall said law enforcement tried to talk the man down to no avail and had to enter the room. When law enforcement entered the room the man was fatally shot. Hall said  no other injuries have been reported.

Hall said he could not confirm if a Sheriff’s deputy shot the man. He said the Canton Police and other agencies were on scene.

“It was a heinous act of violence that happened in (Jonesboro, Arkansas),” Hall said. “The Sheriff’s Office did our job to protect the people of Madison County. We also did our job in trying to talk the man down though he would not give in.”
