Mayor’s Youth Council celebrates first year

The Gluckstadt Mayor’s Youth Council has had a successful first year following a winter coat drive benefitting a local charity.

Mayor Walter Morrison said he is proud of the many activities the GMYC has planned and executed in its first year. He said in addition to their coat drive in January, they have participated in other fundraisers and community events including the Christmas Parade.

Morrison said the success of the youth council is due in large part to the hard work of Julia Lever, the Germantown High School student who started the council.

“She has got her act together,” Morrison said. “She has done a really good job and should be commended.”

In January the youth council held a coat drive collecting more than 85 coats for MadCAAP. Lever said she would like to make the coat drive an annual event.

“The coat drive, which will become an annual event, is just one of several service projects that the Youth Council will complete this year,” Lever said.

All 15 members of the youth council are, like Lever, Germantown High School students. Lever plans to have service projects and activities planned through July and open applications for next year’s membership in August.
