The week of May 9-14, 2021, is designated the seventh annual Madison County Law Enforcement Appreciation Week.

This coincides with National Law Enforcement Appreciation Month. “Madison County wants to express our deepest appreciation and support for our municipal and county law enforcement officers who keep our communities safe and afford us the quality of life we all enjoy,” organizers said.

Madison County Law Enforcement Appreciation Week is sponsored by Canton Tourism, Madison the City Chamber of Commerce, Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce, Ridgeland Tourism, and the Madison County Business League & Foundation. Churches, schools, organizations/clubs, and individuals are encouraged to participate. The Madison County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution proclaiming May 9-14, 2021, as Madison County Law Enforcement Appreciation Week.

Parade of Honor in

Madison on May 13

Madison is getting involved in National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week by taking part in the Madison County Parade of Honor on May 13.

Julene Nicole Stuart, senior mortgage loan officer at Fidelity Mortgage LLC in Madison and administrator of the event, said the parade is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 13 on Reunion Parkway, from Bozeman Road to the entrance of Reunion. All participants will be the first responders that serve and protect Madison County.

“I intentionally scheduled the parade during Law Enforcement Appreciation Week in Madison as an extra way to say thank you and get the community more involved,” Stuart said. “We’d love the parade guests to dress in blue as part of the ‘back the blue’ theme of the week.”

She noted that the first 1,000 guests will receive a free American flag to wave during the parade. Parade guests can set up tents, blankets and chairs in the median. The parade participants will exit Parkway Church and proceed along Reunion Parkway and enter into Reunion.

“Reunion will graciously be serving our first responder participants with a hot meal and cool beverage,” she said. “Special thanks to Parkway Church for the use of their parking lot and support of this amazing event.”

According to Canton Police Department, Canton Academy third graders will be putting together goodie bags for the Canton officers as thanks for their service to the community.

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week begins on Sunday, May 9 and runs through Saturday, May 15.

Ridgeland hosting events

The Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce is planning several events to honor first responders during the week, said Sandy Baas, administrative assistant for the Ridgeland chamber.

Several companies are sponsoring breakfast and dinner for Ridgeland officers that will be delivered to the station throughout the week. These companies include BancorpSouth, Capitol Body Shop, CC’s Coffee House, Hospice Ministries, Members Exchange Credit Union, PriorityOne Bank and Ridgeland Auto World.

Baas said May 13 is planned to be a “Day of Remembrance,” remembering the nation’s fallen men and women in blue. It will take place at 4 p.m. at the Chamber, 754 S. Pear Orchard Rd., Ridgeland, where Mayor McGee and the City of Ridgeland Chief of Police John Neal will give special remarks. Billy Henderson of the Marine Corps League will play Taps, she said.

“On May 14, Ridgeland officers will receive goodie bags at the ‘Celebrate the Blue’ ice cream and cake party (at the chamber),” she said. “These bags will contain gift cards to local restaurants, chapstick, hand sanitizer, chips, gum, granola bars, and other snacks.”

Barnett’s Body Shop is also donating to the Ridgeland Police Department Employee Wellness Center since a request was made by the department for a water bottle filling station for the center.

“The Chamber was able to reach out to one of our members, and Samantha Lofton, owner at Barnett’s Body Shop, answered the call,” Baas said. “Committee Chair Kristy Daniels also reached out to local elementary schools, and they are writing notes and drawing pictures for our officers to thank them for their service to our community.”
