Madison Police say the area around Madison Middle is all clear after reports of gunshots locked down the school this morning.

Capt. Kevin Newman with the Madison Police Department said that they received a few reports of gunshots in the area of Highway 463 and the general area of Madison Middle School and the surrounding neighborhoods around 9:40 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.

He said they have not been able to locate where gunshots were fired or locate a suspect. He said that nothing happened at the school as far as he knows.

“We responded and have been canvassing the area for over an hour and have found nothing,” Newman said. “There was no specific incident at the school or other location that we are aware of.”

Madison County School District Director of Communications Gene Wright said around 10:30 a.m. that the administrators at Madison Middle School issued a campus lockdown out of an abundance of caution after hearing possible gunshots from off-campus earlier that morning.

Wright said the lockdown was lifted at 10:45 a.m. The lockdown lasted just over an hour and was issued at 9:42 a.m.

Wright said the reported gunshots were within earshot of the school campus. She reported that all students and faculty are safe inside the building.
