Madison County choir students earn major wins
Three Madison County public schools represented the district in the Riverland Choral Competition in Pearl earlier this month, bringing home superior ratings and major wins.
The schools included Germantown High School, Ridgeland High School, and Velma Jackson High School.
“Congratulations, singers,” a statement from the school district said.
Out of the 90 groups participating, Germantown's Legacy received superior ratings, Best in Class Ensemble and Grand Champion ensemble. GHS director of choirs Jordan Langworthy said this is the fourth year in a row her choir has taken home the grand champion award at this competition.
“The students work so incredibly hard and continue to maintain a high standard from year to year,” Langworthy said.
The Ridgeland High School Singers and Ridgeland Ladies’ Ensemble, as well as Velma Jackson's Ensemble, received superior ratings. The Germantown High School Women’s Chorus, Cheval, also received superior ratings.
“All the Madison County schools that participated this year received superior ratings and have continued to represent our district so well,” Langworthy said.
According to Langworthy, the Riverland Festival is held every year at Pearl High School in November. She said it is a good early competition to get her kids some competition experience in the fall before the competition choral competition season heats up in the spring semester.
“It is great because it challenges them earlier in the year and gets some of their nerves out of the way,” Langworthy said.
This year the festival featured 92 groups from 35 total schools. Langworhty said schools “from all over” came this year, specifically schools from Mississippi and Tennessee.
Judges came in from all over the country this year and Langworthy said some of the judges were even from Canada.
