Madison Central hosting Germantown in playoffs
Madison County rivals Madison Central and Germantown will meet in the MHSAA quarterfinals on Friday night, marking the first time in history that these two teams have met in the playoffs.
Madison Central edged out the Mavericks at home in the regular season matchup between the two teams, in a 31-28 thriller and Friday night’s playoff matchup should be much of the same.
Since Germantown started playing football in 2011, the two rivals have met six times, with Madison Central winning all six games. Germantown has also never won more than one playoff game in a season and will look to change that as well on Friday night.
Germantown is coming off of a 43-34 upset road victory over one-seeded Oxford, while Madison Central is coming off of a dominant 42-14 home win over DeSoto Central.
It will likely be a battle of great running back units in this one, as it was in the regular season matchup between the two teams. Madison Central running back Glen Singleton carried the load for the Jaguars in the win, totaling 213 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Germantown was led by Lawson Branson 179 rushing yards.
Both quarterbacks in this matchup have been dynamic athletes all season long, with Madison Central quarterback Jaiden Johnson throwing for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for 31 yards in the first matchup. Germantown quarterback King White also threw for 217 yards and a touchdown, while also running for 60 yards and two touchdowns in the first matchup.
White’s favorite target, South Alabama commit Trae Stevenson, also had a monster game in the first matchup, hauling in five catches for 143 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Both defensive units have also been solid throughout the season, with Madison Central being led by Florida commit Micah Jones on the edge as a player to watch.
Madison Central will once again host the rematch between the two teams, as the Jaguars finished second in Region 2-7A, while Germantown finished fourth in Region 2-7A to claim the region’s final playoff spot.
Madison County Schools will be providing a complimentary shuttle ride from Broadmoor Baptist Church to the main entrance of Jaguar Stadium for those wanting to avoid the traffic of on-campus parking. The shuttles will begin at 5:30 PM and run until the game is over and everyone has been brought back to their cars.
Friday night’s MHSAA 7A quarterfinal kickoff between Madison Central and Germantown is set for 7 PM.
