Madison Central beats Germantown, tops region standings
Madison Central baseball continued their strong season with a 5-2 home win over region rival Germantown on Tuesday night.
The Jaguars used a strong pitching performance and found momentum offensively as the game went along to secure the victory.
“We have gotten some timely hits all season and that’s why we are 16-5 and not 5-16,” Madison Central Head Coach Patrick Robey said. “Our guys have really grasped and bought into doing the little things well like playing strong defense, stealing bases, and finding the strike zone on the mound.”
After giving up two unearned runs in the second inning, starting pitcher Gavin Parrow settled in nicely, finishing 6 ⅓ innings, with nine strikeouts, and allowing only three hits on the night. Cameron McCain came in during the seventh to relieve Parrow and got the final two outs to earn the save.
“Gavin (Parrow) settled in well for us once he got a little sweat going and was pretty good for us,” Robey said. “He worked out of some jams for us throughout the game and then Cameron McCain came in during the seventh and closed the door in the seventh inning, which he’s done all year for us.”
A four-run response in the bottom of the second inning was a major factor in turning the momentum in Madison Central’s favor, giving them a lead that they were able to hold on to for the rest of the game.
The Jaguars finished with five hits, led by Ryder Busby with two hits, along with Landon Deslatte, Sanders Ainsworth, and Addison Jayroe adding hits as well.
Dylan Everett led the way for Germantown with two hits and John Riley North added a hit for the Mavericks.
It has been a gauntlet of a schedule for both Madison Central and Germantown, with both playing in one of the state’s best regions in Region 2-7A.
Nonetheless, Madison Central has navigated their difficult schedule nicely, as they currently sit at first in the region with a 5-2 record in region play and a 16-5 overall record. The difficulty of the schedule for the Jaguars should work out strongly in preparing them for the postseason, with expectations of a deep run for the program.
“We have played a lot of good teams this season both in the region and out of the region, there certainly aren’t any cupcakes on our schedule,” Robey said. “I think we need to get a little more consistency from our bullpen going forward, we have been good at times there, but need to find more consistency if we are going to make a run at this thing.”
Madison Central improves to 16-5 overall with the win and are leading the region standings, while Germantown falls to 11-12 on the season and currently sits at fifth in the region standings. The two Madison County rivals will wrap up their two-game series on Friday at Germantown.
Friday’s matchup will wrap up region play for both teams and following the conclusion of the regular season next week, both teams will prepare for the Region 2-7A tournament on the week of April 21st.
