MADISON – Madison Power Rangers Head Coach Kevin Crothers said the mayor recognizing his team for their undefeated season and championship win was one of the most amazing things he has ever experienced.

“Our mayor cares,” Crothers said. “Not only about our city, but about the people in it.”

The Maroon Power Rangers soccer team in the Madison Futbol Club and Mississippi Soccer Association (MSA) received recognition Tuesday night for their exceptional performance last fall and this spring, which led to an undefeated season.

In the fall of 2021, the Maroon Power Rangers went 11-0 and 8-0 in spring 2022, and 4-0 from April 8 through April 10 to take the state championship.

Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler presented each player with a certificate during Tuesday night’s board meeting to recognize their flawless season.

“You all are wonderful, precious people that our Lord created,” Hawkins-Butler said to the players. “Who knows, one day we’ll see future soccer stars from Madison. When you dream big, what happens? Your dreams come true. You can be whoever you want to be and do what you want to do.”

Crothers said his players were going up to the mayor and asking for her autograph.

“Having young children do that means so much not only to me, but the city,” Crothers said. “Last night was one of the most positive and amazing things I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

In other matters during Tuesday night’s meeting, the board:

• Approved a proclamation by Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler to declare the week of May 15-21 as Public Works Week to recognize public works professionals who focus on infrastructure, facilities, emergency management, and services that are of vital importance to sustainable communities and the public health, high quality of life, and well-being of the people of Madison.

• Approved a decrease on Lot 45 of the Ironwood Plantation Subdivision from 50 feet to 30 feet.

• Approved a rear yard building setback decrease from 10 feet to zero feet for a dumpster behind Madison Marketplace at 961 Madison Avenue.

• Approved a variance to allow a rear yard greenspace setback decrease from five feet to zero feet behind the Madison Marketplace.
