Lake Harbour widening at U.S. 51 gets under way

RIDGELAND — Preparations began Monday on a $1.3 million project to widen the Lake Harbour intersection at U.S. 51.

Public Works Director Alan Hart said the project to widen the intersection should finish in April or May but to expect some delays in the meantime.

The work will widen Lake Harbour from Christine Drive to U.S. 51 and make other improvements, according to City Engineer Chris Bryson.

Eastbound Lake Harbour traffic turning south onto U.S. 51 stacks up often because the turn lanes are too short.

The improvements will “accommodate the intersection’s increased traffic flow,” Bryson said in a memo last year.

Hart said motorists could expect some lane closures in February and the city will work to get information out about when and where those will be when appropriate. In the meantime, Hart said, “They will be working behind the curb.”

A bid for $1,347,053.50 from Hemphill Construction was approved by city officials in August.

Hart said the bid came in under the initial estimates.

The project will utilize $1,035,000 in federal grant funding administered by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The grant is expected to cover 75 percent of the project. The city is expected to provide the remaining 25 percent.
