Madison Police continue to investigate a fatal single-car accident that damaged the traffic light at Grandview Boulevard and the Sam’s Club entrance last Thursday morning.

The driver has been identified as Shaunyna K. Johnson, 23, of Jackson.

“The Madison Police Department sends its condolences to Ms. Johnson’s family and friends,” Madison Police Capt. Kevin Newman said.

He said that no other persons or vehicles were involved in the traffic crash. The accident remains under investigation by accident reconstruction investigators with the Madison Police Department.

The traffic signal at Grandview Boulevard at the Sam’s Club entrance was out of service for much of the day Thursday until it was repaired.

Newman said that on July 30, at approximately 4:29 a.m., MPD was notified of a traffic crash on Grandview Boulevard near the Sam’s Club store. Upon the arrival of Madison police and fire personnel, they found that Johnson, the driver of a single-vehicle involved in the crash, had succumbed to injuries.

Further investigation from MPD revealed that the vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Altima, was traveling southbound on Grandview Boulevard when it left the right side of the roadway just north of the main entrance to the Sam’s Club store. The vehicle then struck a power junction box for the traffic signal on the southwest side of the intersection at Grandview Boulevard at the Sam’s Club entrance causing the vehicle to overturn.
