Jackson man captured after Gluckstadt chase
GLUCKSTADT — A Jackson man’s arrest following a brief chase in a stolen vehicle on the interstate late last month could lead to further arrests.
The man, Tailan Reshard Johnson, 22, was arrested and charged with felony eluding police officers, receiving stolen property, possession of paraphernalia, failure to comply, careless driving, improper tag, and no insurance, Gluckstadt Police Chief Barry Hale said.
Johnson remains in the Madison County Detention Center on $145,000 bond following his arrest in January in which he allegedly fled police in a stolen vehicle on the interstate.
Hale said the vehicle was stolen from the Hot Spot service station in Gluckstadt on the Calhoun Station Parkway but noted no further information would be released as the investigation is ongoing and his office hopes to make further arrests.
“It is an ongoing investigation,” Hale said. “We may have more arrests soon and we don’t want to much out in the news.”
Hale said the Gluckstadt Police Department first encountered Johnson on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at about 11 p.m. when officers on I-55 just south of the Nissan exit attempted to stop a northbound vehicle that had been reported stolen.
Hale said the driver failed to yield, leading officers on a brief pursuit.
Spike strips were deployed to deflate the tires of the vehicle Johnson was driving. After the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect fled on foot but was quickly apprehended in a wooded area near the Nissan plant. Hale said the chase concluded at about 11:20 p.m.
“The Gluckstadt Police Department commends the dedication and hard work of our officers in ensuring the safety of our community,” Hale said. “We remain committed to protecting and serving all those who live, work, and visit our city.”
Hale said other local law enforcement agencies assisted GPD in apprehending Johnson.
“The Gluckstadt Police Department would like to say thank you to Canton Police for their assistance and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department who was able to successfully spike the tires on the vehicle bringing it to a stop before he was able to injure anyone,” Hale said.
