No inures have been reported as crews work to clear an 18-wheeler accident that occurred near the 111-mile marker on southbound I-55 in Madison County early Thursday morning snarling rush hour traffic.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Kervin Stewart said that officials had one lane open around 2 p.m. Thursday but were still clearing the scene.

“No inures and they are still on the scene with one southbound lane open,” Stewart said at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Chris Vignes, deputy commissioner, External Affairs with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said that at approximately 7 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol was advised of a crash involving an 18-wheeler carrying steel cables, which rolled over in the median near the 111-mile marker on southbound I-55 in Madison County.

Traffic was diverted onto U.S. 51 at Gluckstadt as crews worked to clear the scene.

Traffic was affected as far south as Madison, Madison Police Capt. Kevin Newman said.

“We did see an increase in traffic on Highway 51 and Bozeman Road but there have been no accidents or serious delays as a result,” Newman said.
