U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith will headline the City of Ridgeland’s Veterans Day Celebration, Friday, Nov. 11 at Ridgeland’s City Hall beginning at 11 a.m.

Hyde-Smith is the first woman elected to represent Mississippi in Washington, D.C.  She won a six-year term in November 2020, following her April 2018 appointment to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by long-time U.S. Senator Thad Cochran and subsequent November 2018 special election victory to complete his term.

The Nov. 11 Veterans Day Celebration will be held outside City Hall in the Veterans Memory Park which includes benches and plaques commemorating the six branches of service. The park also features a central walkway, the Walk of Heroes, and a flagpole. The center point is a seven-foot bell tower.

The Veterans Day Celebration includes Ridgeland High School’s ROTC and Ridgeland High School’s acclaimed choir. Selections include, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and “In Flander’s Fields.”

“We are honored that Sen. Hyde-Smith will join us for this special celebration,” said Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee. “As senator, she has been active and successful in the legislative process to improve the overall quality of life for all Mississippians, using her committee assignments to support policies and legislation to benefit our state and the nation.”

Mike McCollum, a veteran and former Public Works Director for the City of Ridgeland, is chairman of the Veterans Memory Park Committee.  “Having Sen. Hyde-Smith serve as our keynote speaker gives extra special meaning to our Veterans Day Celebration,” McCollum said.

“We encourage everyone to join us as we pay tribute to the sacrifices our veterans and their families have made for the freedoms we all cherish,” he added.
