MADISON — Officials are asking for patience as traffic is expected to be altered on Hoy Road for more than a year as a multi-step $9 million improvement project commences.

David Hodge, public works administrator for the city of Madison, said that Hemphill Construction received their order to proceed on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The $9 million project includes improvements to the intersection Hoy and Rice/Tisdale Road; curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements; a multi-use path; and the widening of Hoy Road to five lanes from Old Canton to Victoria Place. From there it will remain two lanes to the east.

The project is expected to last about 18 months with a completion date expected sometime in the spring of 2022.

The widening project will leave that section of the road westbound only for much of the project. Hodge said that a Hemphill subcontractor has already begun posting signs instructing motorists to take detours on Tisdale and Rice Roads. The partial road closure could come as early as this week. Hodge said Wednesday he would be talking to the contractor about more exact details.

“I will be getting an update this afternoon from the engineer and contractor,” Hodge said.

Hodge said that they had not received many complaints though some social media chatter has suggested that traffic has been backed up as far as Green Oak Lane in the county.

Denson Robinson, former director of public works for Madison who now serves as a consultant, asked that motorists remain patient while construction is underway.

“We ask that people please be patient and cautious in the construction zone for the duration of the project,” Robinson said.

Hodge said that the city has been working get information out through their channels including city and Police Department websites and social media. He said citizens can also get updates by texting “Madison” to 95577.
