Household Hazardous Waste Day set for Saturday

MADISON — If you have hazardous household items such as batteries, small electronics and appliances taking up space around your house, Saturday is your chance to get rid of those items free of charge.

Madison the City, Madison County, Keep Mississippi Beautiful and Ridgeland teamed up to offer the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 13, at Madison Central High School, 1417 Highland Colony, Madison.

Items that will be accepted at the disposal event include batteries, electronics and small appliances such as computer equipment, TVs, microwaves and more, prescription drugs, household chemicals, tires and documents up to two kitchen-size garbage bags to shred. 

Items that will not be accepted at Saturday’s event include air conditioners, bicycles, large appliances, light bulbs, mattresses, lawnmowers, medical, nuclear or radioactive wastes and thermostats.

Drivers can drop off their disposable items at various stations located on the campus of Madison Central High School 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Enter the campus from Park Place Boulevard and onto Madison Central Drive to follow the signs for vendors accepting papers for shredding, tires, batteries, prescription drugs, electronics and household hazardous wastes.

The event is being paid for with a $75,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
