WASHINGTON D.C. — Congressman Michael Guest, Republican for Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District, has been appointed as the vice chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security. Chairman Mark Green of Tennessee announced the leadership assignments last Friday.

“For years, I have worked closely with my fellow Republicans to develop common-sense solutions to the border crisis and to defend our homeland from foreign threats,” Guest said. “I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside Chairman Green to finally bring the Republican plan to secure our border to the floor of the House of Representatives and to promote legislation that would advance our mission of creating a more secure nation.”

In June 2021, Guest was appointed as the vice ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security by former Ranking Member John Katko. In his role, Guest joined other Congressional leaders on multiple trips to the border to discuss the border crisis directly with law enforcement agents.

Guest will also return to the CHS subcommittee on Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations, which is tasked primarily with land, maritime, and air security along the southern and northern borders of the United States and DHS policies on legal trade and travel.

As vice ranking member, Guest introduced multiple pieces of legislation that addressed the border crisis or its immediate impacts.

Last year, Guest introduced the bipartisan and bicameral END FENTANYL Act, which would require Customs and Border Protection to update its manuals at least every three years to identify ways to help prevent drug and human smuggling activity through ports of entry.

Guest also joined current Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul to introduce the International Drug Trafficking and Human Smuggling Partnership Act of 2022, which would grant CBP permanent authority to operate in foreign countries in order to advance its mission to protect Americans from international criminal activity.

Guest also introduced the Border Enforcement Security Task Force Act (BEST Act), which would reauthorize the Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) and help stop the flow of illicit narcotics into the United States by thwarting the criminal activity of transnational criminal organizations.

Guest has also been tapped to chair the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics. He’s also been appointed to the powerful House Appropriations Committee.
