GLUCKSTADT — The Mayor’s Youth Council here continues to shape up with confirmed members and concrete ways to be involved with the new city.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen approved the idea of a Mayor’s Youth Council in August after Germantown sophomore Julia Lever presented ideas of how the council could benefit Gluckstadt along with ideas such as a MYC $1,500 student scholarship and a “Gluckstadt City Day.”

The board held a special meeting on Nov. 2 to present the idea to the city, and Lever returned to speak more about what the council can offer to Gluckstadt.

Lever said she spent the summer studying other cities which had similar programs, what worked for them and what didn’t, how big the councils were and what goals they set, and how those goals were achieved.

“After much work and effort from a lot of people, I am pleased to congratulate the soon-to-be members of the first inaugural City of Gluckstadt’s Mayor’s Youth Council,” Lever said.

Incoming members of the council, which will be officially announced during the board’s Nov. 8 meeting, include:

• Micah Schuller

• Ashtun Chigbo

• Kendall Zollicoffer

• Sevana Sharpe

• Regan Alexander

• Jrace Jamison

• Mary Peyton Barnette

• Laighton Green

• Reese Alman

• Avery Hornback

• Alli McDavid

• Gabrielle Austin

• Tytianna Course Robinson

• Austin Sanders

Lever said her goal for the council is to serve as a factor to the youth in Gluckstadt.

“While the city grows, it’s important everybody looks to the future, and that includes our future generations,” Lever said. “Guys, that is us. We are the future of this city and it’s important we take an active role in representing our demographic in our community.

Lever said she hopes to promote things like volunteerism to the community and wants to hit the ground running with being involved in possible events like a “Gluckstadt City Day,” where multiple leaders will meet with the youth of the community and show them what the mayor’s office does.

She also proposed things like an art contest for the city that could be used in city promotions and events, an “Exam Week” where local businesses and venues can show encouragement to students during finals week by holding events and providing incentives, and participation in Gluckstadt’s first annual Christmas parade this year and Fourth of July celebrations next summer.

“Overall, we will be an active group,” she said. “This will be a group effort, and I want ideas from everyone. I hope that as soon as our first meeting, we can start throwing out ideas and it will make our first year a stellar one. We are the future leaders of our area. We want this group to grow and prosper and I want us to be visible in the community and business owners to get to know each of us.”

Mayor Walter Morrison said everyone on the Mayors Youth Council has an opportunity to take a leadership role.

“You have the opportunity to not only get involved, but to also set an example,” Morrison said. “You know in today’s day and age how people shouldn’t act towards each other, and you should know how to treat each other for not only those your own age, but everyone else. I’m excited, and this is a great idea. We look forward to working with the council and it’s going to be exciting.”

City Clerk Lindsay Kellum said she is very proud of Lever and that she is an example of a true leader.

“Gluckstadt is a new and growing city and we want your input with the youth of this city shaping that,” Kellum said. “Whatever the city clerk’s office can do for the council, we’re here for you guys.”
