Germantown alumna and Ridgeland native Madison Booker, who is now a star at the University of Texas, was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year last week, following a phenomenal sophomore season.

Booker has been one of the most dominant players in the country, while playing in the best conference in the country this year, averaging 16.2 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 2.8 assists per game, and shot 43.9 percent from the three-point line.

Booker has also led Texas to a 31-3 record so far, a SEC regular season co-championship, a SEC tournament runner-up finish, and what will likely be a number-one seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Her outstanding sophomore season comes off an already accomplished freshman season, where she won Big 12 Freshman of the Year, was named an All-American, won the Cheryl Miller award for the best small forward in the country, Big 12 tournament MVP, and became the first freshman to ever win Big 12 Player of the Year.

During her time at Germantown, Booker was the best player in the state and led the Lady Mavericks to their first state championship in program history in 2023. She was also named an All-State performer for three straight years at Germantown.

Booker was a McDonald’s All-American and a top-ten ranked recruit nationally in the high school class of 2023. She also won three gold medals for the USA women’s basketball junior teams, including two World Cups and a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship.

Booker’s final schools coming out of Germantown was a loaded list of national powerhouses including Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee, UConn, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Oregon, and the Longhorns.

Booker comes from a basketball family, as her father, Carlos Booker was a center at Southern Miss during his playing career.

Looking ahead for Booker, Texas will be one of the favorites to win the national championship in the upcoming NCAA tournament. She will also be one of the top WNBA draft prospects once she finishes her college career in 2027, giving Booker a chance to become one of the most decorated players in women’s college basketball at the time that her collegiate career ends.
