UPDATE: MPD said the roadway has been cleared for traffic after about a four hour closure.

MADISON — A gas leak shut down a stretch of the roadway on Mississippi 463 near Old Main Street on Tuesday morning. Traffic is being diverted but no businesses have been closed or evacuated, authorities said.

Madison Police Capt. Kevin Newman said the Madison Parkway, also known as Mississippi Highway 463, is closed at Old Main Street due to a leaking gas line. The department announced the potential traffic problem at approximately 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

“No businesses or residences have been evacuated,” Newman said. “Please avoid the area and expect delays.”

Newman said the call came in at 7:41 a.m. Tuesday.

“After accessing the situation the road was closed at approximately 7:50 a.m.,” Newman said. “It will take several hours to have the gas turned off so that repairs can be made (CenterPoint). A C-Spire sub-contractor was working in the area and hit the line.”

Eastbound traffic is being diverted south at Crawford Farms Road to Madison Avenue.

Westbound traffic is being diverted at U.S. 51 to westbound points further north and south of the Parkway.

The situation is ongoing, and The Madison County Journal will update this story as more information is available.
