Friendship Park to remain closed until February

RIDGELAND – Due to weather and equipment problems, the temporary closure at Friendship Park has been extended to Feb. 3 to remove dead and hazardous trees and scheduled park maintenance.

Friendship Park was temporarily closed on Monday, Jan. 6, John Sidney North, director of Recreation and Parks, said.

The closure was initially set to continue through Tuesday, Jan. 21, but has been extended more than a week to the first Monday in February.

“The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and to enhance the long-term health of the park’s natural environment,” North said.

Planned work includes the removal of dead and dying trees that pose safety risks, maintenance and repair of park facilities and trails, and general upkeep to “preserve the park’s beauty and functionality.”

“Crews will be working diligently to minimize disruptions and complete the work as efficiently as possible,” North said.

North said completing these tasks and reopening the park is contingent on cooperation from the weather.

“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we make these important improvements to Friendship Park,” North said.
