Flora opts out of cultivation, sale of medical marijuana

FLORA — Officials here voted to opt-out of the cultivation, processing, sale and distribution of medical cannabis products within the city until they learn more about “the planning and zoning side of it”, Mayor Les Childress said.

“We can opt back in at any time,’ Childress said. “Right now we just don’t enough about it and the regs. We wanted to opt-out to give us time to understand the planning and zoning sure of it and so forth.”

Childress said that everyone in Flora he has talked to on the issue has said that the board’s decision to “slow walk” the process “makes sense.”

The motion passed in a 4-1 vote. Alderman Mary Sumler was the lone “nay” vote. The resolution passed on March 8.

The Ridgeland and Gluckstadt city boards have also voted to opt-out at previous meetings.

In Ridgeland, Mayor Gene F. McGee and other officials have made statements similar to Childress' reasoning for opting out.

Specifically, McGee said that opting out gave the city time to see what happens in places that do opt-in and noted that it would take longer than they had for the deadline to opt-in or out to draft proper zoning amendments concerning the medical marijuana industry.

The Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act went into effect on Feb. 2 of this year and municipalities have 90 days after that date to opt-out of the act in whole or in parts.
