Flora Historical Marker

The Flora Train Depot recently received a plaque commemorating its historic significance thanks to the efforts of Friends Of Flora and the generosity of the Ergon Family Foundation. In 1882, the Illinois Central Railroad selected this site as a stop on its new Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad connecting northern markets with the Gulf Coast and paralleling the Mississippi River.
Railroad vice president and general manager James C. Clarke named the new stop “Flora” in honor of Flora Mann Jones, the wife of Capt. William B. Jones, who donated the right-of-way to the railroad. The town was incorporated in 1886.
Completed in 1893, the depot is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
