A Ridgeland firefighter and Madison police officer were recognized as First Responder of the Year by the Keesler Federal Credit Union.

The recipients earlier this month were Sgt. Wayne Dill of the Ridgeland Fire Department and Madison DUI Officer Curtis Raymond Chism.

“To show our gratitude to these brave men and women, we encourage every department in our footprint to nominate one First Responder of the Year,” stated Caitlin Bradshaw, Keesler Federal Credit Union. Each winner receives an award plus a $100 gift card, both presented in person.

Dill was recognized on Oct. 4 and Chism was recognized on Oct. 12.

The program has been in place for about five years according to Bradshaw.

Sgt. Dill has faithfully served the Ridgeland Fire Department for 18 years, city spokeswoman Kim Cooper said.

“It’s a true honor as individuals are selected across the state and nominated by their peers,” she said.

During his time with the department, he has shown a great passion for the job and serving the citizens of Ridgeland.

“He leads by example and is a great mentor to the new and upcoming firefighters - helping them train and further their knowledge in firefighting and Emergency Medical Service skills,” said Deputy Chief James Stokes.

Chism was hired by the Madison Police Department on Feb. 21, 2018. During his time in the patrol division, Chism received numerous accolades for his positive interactions with Madison citizens during times of distress, according to his nomination by his peers at MPD.

Chism was nominated recently by his peers and voted by the Department of TOP COP for his achievements in DUI-related cases and displaying great professionalism, integrity, and giving his absolute best to work hard and represent the City of Madison and its citizens for the betterment of the community, their statement said.
