Firefighter injured by downed power line recovering
A Canton firefighter injured while on a call last week is home and expected to make a full recovery, Assistant Fire Chief Kelvin Luckett said.
Canton firefighters responded to a tree that fell on a power line around 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday, April 2, on Renfroe Road near the intersection with Sharon Road.
Luckett said the firefighter was injured when he got too close to the downed power line.
The firefighter was then transported to Merit Health in Canton and then airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for further treatment.
No other injuries were reported from the scene, Luckett said.
According to Luckett, the UMMC AirCare services were grounded for most of the day due to high winds. He said he was thankful they were able to find a window to transport the injured firefighter.
“We want to give a special thanks to AirCare,” Luckett said.
Luckett said the firefighter was released from the hospital on Monday and is in the care of his family.
“I believe he is looking to make a full recovery,” Luckett said.
Luckett said they are not releasing the name of the firefighter at this time.
