DSU hosting alumni event June 23
The Delta State University Alumni Association will be traveling to Jackson for the annual Greater Jackson Area Alumni Event at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 23. This year’s event will be held at the Mississippi Children's Museum.
DSU President William N. LaForge, along with Alumni Association staff and other University guests, will be sharing news from campus. Entertainment will be provided by Delta State alum Cole Furlow.
Proceeds from the event's silent auction and 50/50 raffle will benefit the Greater Jackson Area Scholarship fund, which is awarded to incoming freshmen from the Jackson Metro area who plan to attend Delta State. Previous scholarship recipients will be honored and recognized at this year's event.
"Green and White nation is coming to town! Local alumni and friends of the University unite! This year's event is sure to be unique because we will celebrate the young alumni who have benefitted from our Jackson Chapter's efforts through our local scholarship," says Melissa Love, DSU Jackson alumna and board member. "We are especially excited to have Cole Furlow play at this year's event."
Cole Furlow is a Jackson, MS native, multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer, composer, and photographer. Son of a band director, Cole grew up around many different genres of music, spawning a creative ear at an early age. Once he picked up the guitar, he never looked back. Honing his skills in high school playing in garage bands, he moved to Oxford and enrolled in Ole Miss where he realized his passion for studio recording and began forming his music career. Furlow completed his education at Delta State in the DMI program with a focus in Studio Theory and a minor in English.
In 2010, he released his first single with his band, Dead Gaze, and went on to produce three full-length albums: Dead Gaze (2013), Brain Holiday (2013), and Easy Travels (2016). During that time, he received critically acclaimed reviews from Pitchfork, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Paste Magazine. Upon moving back to Jackson in 2018, he began a new-age acoustic guitar project called Low Variety and released a solo experimental pop record under the name RCF.
Currently, among owning and operating a recording studio above Hal & Mal’s in Downtown Jackson where he lives with his wife Laura Beth, Cole works for MWB Creative making original commercial scores, compositions, on-site recordings, and podcasts.
