DEASON/AWS investment launches new era of innovation, growth in Madison County

When we consider the everyday digital experiences we rely on today – streaming shows, engaging in video meetings, or securely backing up our photos and important files, the digital world runs on data stored in the cloud, and soon that cloud will run through AWS data centers right here in Madison County.

Over the past year, Madison County has entered a new era as a community and a destination for economic development. The $10 billion investment by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for a series of data centers in two industrial parks promises not only new jobs and business opportunities, but a significant place for the county and its people in the 21st century global economy.

We’re already seeing direct benefits across a range of sectors, from increased demand for skilled labor and trades to greater activity among local contractors, suppliers, and service providers. AWS’s presence is also inspiring renewed investment in infrastructure and workforce development, helping to ensure that our residents are equipped for the high-tech jobs of today and tomorrow.

This monumental investment is the largest capital project in Mississippi’s history, shaping the future of Madison County and setting the pace for the state’s growing technology sector. The state-of-the-art data centers AWS is establishing will power cloud computing services for customers around the world and will help drive the global digital economy while anchoring Madison County as a hub for cutting-edge digital infrastructure and talent.

The economic benefits are already clear. AWS’s investment is expected to create at least 1,000 high-paying, high-tech jobs, with an even broader impact supporting more than 2,700 jobs annually across Mississippi. It is also projected to contribute approximately $3.3 billion to the state’s gross domestic product, with ripple effects reaching every corner of the local economy.

Beyond bricks and mortar, AWS is investing in the people of Mississippi. The company is working closely with local schools, community colleges, and workforce organizations to equip residents with the skills needed for careers in fiber optics, data center operations, and cybersecurity. For example, in 2024, AWS held its first hands-on fusion splicing workshops at Holmes Community College, helping students gain in-demand technical certifications that are critical to the operation of data center infrastructure. Last year AWS also launched its first Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship program at Holmes Community College, which provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on skills for roles in data centers, fiber optic cabling, and skilled trades like electricians and HVAC technicians. These programs are key to building a resilient, homegrown talent pipeline that will support our community well into the future.

While this transformative partnership’s scale is unprecedented, it isn’t scale alone that makes AWS such an important partner. AWS leaders listen, they show up, and they look for ways to align their strengths with the needs of our community.

This is more than just an economic development win; it is a defining moment that will shape our region for generations to come. We look forward to building on this momentum together and ensuring that the opportunities created today lead to an even stronger tomorrow for all Mississippians.

Joseph P. Deason is Executive Director of the Madison County Economic Development Authority.
