Cypress Lake standoff ends peacefully

MADISON — Police here say that a roughly two-hour standoff with a resident in the Cypress Lake subdivision ended peacefully Friday morning.

Capt. Kevin Newman said that officers with the Madison Police Department were assisting an unnamed state agency in serving a court order to a resident.

Newman said that at approximately 10:25 a.m., officers of the MPD arrived with members of a state agency to enforce a court order against a resident at a home near the entrance to the Cypress Lake Subdivision.

At that time the woman refused to open the door. Just under two hours later the woman answered the door.

“At approximately 12:17 p.m. the female occupant opened the door to the residence at which time the incident ended peacefully without incident,” Newman said.

Upon arrival officers and investigators learned that the female to be served the order was in the residence and refused to open the door or exit the residence, Newman said.

He said that during the standoff “out of an abundance of caution,” a perimeter was established around the residence and communication began with the female occupant via telephone. Newman said that the entrance, the only way in or out of the subdivision, had to be blocked off during the standoff.

“Unfortunately, due to the proximity of this residence to the only entrance/exit to the subdivision, the entrance and exit was temporarily closed,” Newman said.

Newman said at the time that they did not expect the woman to be armed or an imminent threat to officers and that the standoff would be resolved in time.

“In my experience after an hour or two people come to their senses and answer the door,” Newman said.

MPD coordinated with Cypress Lake Home Owners Association personnel to establish active notifications to residents via their social media platform.

After the female occupant opened the door, the state officers executed their court order. The female occupant was transported to a local medical facility for evaluation. No charges are pending against the individual at this time.
