Coin laundry expansion in Ridgeland put on hold

RIDGELAND — The future of a coin laundry business on Lake Harbour Drive here is in limbo after city officials tabled an expansion saying the building is “past its prime.”

Aldermen unanimously voted to table a petition from the business at 113 Lake Harbour Drive to expand into a adjoining space space in the strip center. Officials will likely revisit the matter at a their October meeting, they said.

Ward 2 Alderman Chuck Gautier acknowledged that coin laundry services are “well needed’ but argued that traffic coming in and out of the existing building was “horrible” and argued the building is “past its prime.”

“I think the city would benefit from that building not being there,” Gautier said.

Mayor Gene F. McGee agreed that the building could soon become unusable.

It was also stated that the coming project to widen the intersection of Lake Harbour Drive and Highway 51 could exacerbate the existing issues.

City Planner Jordan Lohmn presented the petition and application for the conditional use permit by B.G. Capital LLC.

Lohman said they were asked to expand into the adjacent space and that the project had received Zoning Board approval.

The petitioner is requesting the conditional use permit to allow the expansion of the coin laundry business into the adjoining space at 111 Lake Harbour Drive.

The expansion will increase the square footage from 1,200 square feet to roughly three times and double the equipment. The expansion will also include an office for drop-offs and will allow for a “fluff and fold” type service, officials said.
