City’s sales tax collections down from last year

Despite a dip in sales tax returns from last year based on the latest numbers, city officials say businesses continue to open in the city.

In March, the Lucky City reported $221,591 in sales tax returns, according to the state Department of Revenue. The DOR returns a percentage of sales tax collected to municipalities.

That number is down $8,211 from March 2024 when Gluckstadt collected $229,591 in sales tax returns.

Returns for the year are also down. At this point in the 2023-2024 Fiscal Year had collected more than $1.4 million in sales tax diversions compared to just $1,378,900 this year.

Despite the decreased revenues, Gluckstadt continues to grow. Building Official William Hall told aldermen they currently have more than 250 active building permits in the city.

“Most of that is commercial,” Hall told the board at their March 11 regular meeting.

Gluckstadt Mayor Walter C. Morrison was pleased with the ongoing growth in the city.

“That is awesome,” he said.

The board would go onto to approve site plans for two new businesses, a Zaxby’s and a Take 5 Oil Change.

Hall said the developers of the Take 5 are also working to present a new liquor store to the board at a future meeting.
