MADISON — State and local agencies worked for about 40 minutes to clear a car in the southbound lanes of I-55 last Wednesday morning.

Madison Police Cap. Kevin Newman said that Mississippi Highway Patrol were the first to the scene of a vehicle fire on I-55 southbound between the 109 and 108 mile markers on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Newman said the call was reported to them by MHP at 9:42 a.m.

MPD assisted in traffic control and the Madison Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

Newman said that all the southbound lanes were blocked for between 30 and 40 minutes total. Traffic was diverted at the Gluckstadt exit to Bozeman Road and Galleria Parkway during this time.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation reported at 10:10 a.m. regarding the vehicle fire and announced the scene cleared after 10:40 a.m.

The fire is believed to have originated in the engine compartment area, though Newman said it is unknown what caused the fire.
