Canton shooting kills boy, 6, and 1 adult, injures another

Canton police are looking for a man believed to be connected to a Thursday evening shooting that killed a 6-year-old and one adult and injured another adult.

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said officers are looking for a Tomar Smith in connection with the shooting after Canton Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired on Franklin Street about 10 minutes before 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26.

Brown said that when officers arrived on scene they found a deceased 42-year-old Tracy Wilder who had been shot multiple times. Brown said they also found an Octavion Carter who had been shot in the wrist.

About a block away at the Marathon Gas on at the corner of Peace Street and South Canal Street, they found a Jeison Lopez, 6, who had been fatally injured when he was struck by a stray bullet from the gunfire. Lopez was pronounced dead later after being airlifted to University Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Brown said officers currently have no motive, though they are seeking three suspects who were seen leaving the scene of the crime in a white Dodge Charger. He said Smith is believed to be the driver though no other suspects have been identified as of Friday morning.

Brown said officers have recovered the vehicle and are processing it for evidence related to the shooting.

Canton Mayor William Truly during a Friday press conference reportedly imposed an immediate curfew for everyone under 18 in the city.
