Canton police make arrest in apartment murder

CANTON – Police arrested a Canton man Tuesday morning in connection with the shooting death of another Canton man at a Canton apartment building.

Xavier Barnes, 26, is currently in custody and charged in the murder of Terrel McDonald, who was found dead in the South Canal Street Apartments parking lot.  

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said as of right now there is no known motive for the shooting.

“We don’t have a motive yet and we have no information as of now of what led to the shooting,” Brown said. “Investigators are still looking into the shooting to find out what took place.”

McDonald, 29, was shot one time in the chest. Barnes was arrested on the scene right after the shooting around 8:30 a.m.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and my condolences go out to the deceased subject’s family,” Brown said. “My officers on the investigation team did a great job apprehending the subject so quickly.”

Brown said he and his team should know something regarding the motive of the shooting soon.
