Canton Academy names new football coach

Canton Academy did not have to look far for their new head football coach.

Canton Academy alum and assistant coach Tripp McCarty was tapped to lead the football program, the school announced on Tuesday.

“Being around Canton Academy students and the coaching staff made accepting the head coach position an easy position,” McCarty said in a statement posted by Canton Academy on social media. “I’ve had several opportunities but none offered the potential that Canton Academy has going forward.”

McCarty has no shortage of experience, with head coaching stops at Brookhaven Academy and Pillow Academy and assistant coaching positions at Canton Academy, MRA, Presbyterian Christian, and Mississippi College in 28 years of head coaching experience.

McCarty’s head coaching record is 73-48 with Brookhaven Academy from 2011-2013 and Pillow Academy from 2014-2020. McCarty won a state championship as the head coach for Brookhaven Academy in 2012.

He is also a certified quarterback and wide receiver instructor for the National Football Academies.

Other head coaching accolades for McCarty include, multiple district coach of the year awards, all-star team coach, and MAIS Coach of the Year.

McCarty replaces Gage Posey, who recently announced his resignation from his position after four seasons and a state championship in 2022.
