Callaway’s addition approved with better landscaping

GLUCKSTADT — A 10,000-square foot addition to a garden center here was ultimately approved on Monday by supervisors after a two-week delay over landscaping at the property. 

Earlier this month, District 2 Supervisor Trey Baxter was reluctant to recommend approval of a site plan for addition to Callaway’s Yard & Garden on Calhoun Station Parkway because of the lack of detail in landscaping on site. 

“I wish I could have gotten my hands around this building from the get-go,” Baxter said on Nov. 2. “Now we’re playing catch up.”

Baxter said he felt like a yard and garden center should have proper landscaping on site given that’s their business. He said initial plans given to the board did not provide much detail for what would be planned. 

“I’d like to see some more landscaping to be honest,” Baxter said Nov. 2, before the board tabled the matter for two weeks. 

On Monday, representatives from Callaway’s presented a plan to include landscaping beds in the front and side. 

Brint Callaway told supervisors that the original plan when the building was built was for underground power lines, but developers instead switched to overhead power lines and that halted plans to plant oak trees on the property. 

“Nothings ever really gotten done on it,” he said of the landscaping out front. “This should make up for some of that.”

Supervisors ultimately approved the site plan for the addition. The materials used will match the existing structure.
