Boychoir hosting fundraiser in Flowood

The Mississippi Boychoir is hosting its third annual “Be the Light” 5K and 10K race on Nov. 5 at the Flowood Nature Trail, and several Madison countians are excited to be participating.

Boychoir members from Madison County taking part in the race this year include: Jake Morrison, Beau Corley, Omari Walker, Lance Taylor, Joshua Cothron, and Kameron Keller.

Walker said his favorite part of helping with the race is seeing the positive energy from the choir members and racers. He said he loves being in the Mississippi Boychoir and the camaraderie that comes with it.

“This group really feels like a second family,” Walker said. “I also like when we do mass choir events, and we can participate with people from other choirs from around the country.”

Kameron Keller said his favorite part of the race is the hot cocoa and helping hand out the medals to the winners at the end.

“I like the fact that we are singing professionally and the opportunities that being in the choir have offered me,” Keller said.

The Boychoir was founded in 1995 and has provided a life-changing musical, cultural, and developmental experience for young men in Mississippi for over 25 years. The group formed in Columbus, and operates three chapters today in Jackson, Vicksburg, and Brookhaven.  

Lanise Aultman with the Mississippi Boychoir said the race is a fundraiser and all proceeds go toward the programming of the Boychoir.

“The morning will be filled with races, snacks, door prizes, pre-race stretching, and more,” she said. “Mississippi Boychoir members will be in attendance and sing a few selections.”

Lance Taylor, another member of the Boychoir, said he is taking part in the race for the first time and is looking forward to interacting with his fellow choir members and the racers.

“I like the community of the Boychoir and being part of the group,” Taylor said. “There is a great group of guys here that made me feel welcome right away.”

The “Be the Light” 5K and 10k is being held at the Flowood Nature Trail on 4077 Flowood Drive on Nov. 5 at 9 a.m., and registration packets will be available at 7:30 a.m. Tickets for the race may be purchased online at www.raceroster.com, and Early Bird Pricing is in effect until Oct. 10.
