GLUCKSTADT — The second week of May has been declared Lung Cancer Action Week.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night asked for public support to fund things like new treatment and early detection.

Rochelle Thompson of the American Lung Association said lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths and said a lot of people likely know someone who has had lung cancer and died because of it.

Thompson referenced the resolution from the board about Lung Cancer Action Week and said every two and a quarter minutes, a person in the United States is diagnosed with Lung Cancer.

“Lung cancer screening saves lives, and advocacy and increased awareness will result in more high-risk individuals getting screened,” Thompson said. “Public support for research funding will result in new treatments and better methods of early detection.”

The resolution also states the Lung Force is a national initiative led by the American Lung Association to defeat lung cancer. As part of the resolution, Gluckstadt is designating the second week in May as Lung Cancer Action Week and encourages all residents to learn more about lung cancer risk factors, early detection, and to take action.

“Thank you all so much for your consideration,” Thompson said.

Alderman Miya Bates made a motion to approve the resolution, and Alderman John Taylor seconded the motion. The resolution passed unanimously.

In other matters, the board:

• Unanimously approved a resolution outlining tax policies, procedures, continuing disclosure, and no protest for municipal bonds.

• Unanimously approved an Arrington subdivision street lighting invoice.

• Unanimously approved a culvert clean-out in Bear Creek at Gluckstadt Road and Dees Road.

• Unanimously approved a proposal for a $500 annual scholarship and trophy by the Mayor’s Youth Council Outstanding Leadership for a chosen senior each year.

• Unanimously approved the acceptance of a Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Grant (CESF) and grant award of $22,692.00.
