Aldermen adopt ordinance for architecture

City officials approved an architectural design ordinance despite the dissent of one alderman.

The new ordinance creates a “cheat sheet of architectural design” in the city, according to Planning and Zoning Administrator William Hall.

Hall said it was something that could be easily printed out and given to future developers that says, “This is what we are looking for.”

Hall said the ordinance gives the Architectural Review Board “something to lean on.”

Hall proposed the ordinance in a memo dated April 1.

“The City of Gluckstadt has an established Architectural Review Board along with the review process of a site plan within the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Aldermen,” Hall wrote. “The proposed Architectural Design Ordinance will put in writing the expected design styles, materials, and general use of these in commercial and multi-family developments.”

Alderman John Taylor said he felt the board should table the issue until after the upcoming municipal election. He made a motion to reconsider the issue after the new board is installed in July.

The motion failed due to a lack of a second, and a motion by Alderman Jayce Powell to approve the ordinance was introduced.

The motion was seconded by Alderman Wesley Slay and passed with a 4-1 vote. Taylor cast the lone vote against the motion.
