A showing of ‘The Grinch’ downtown is meant for families
MADISON — Settling in with the family on the lawn of the Madison Performing Arts Center to watch “The Grinch (2018)” might be the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit and kick off the holiday season.
“The Grinch (2018)” will be the featured movie for the annual “Movie on Main Street” scheduled this evening, Thursday, Nov. 18, on the grounds of the Madison Performing Arts Center at 2103 Main St. in Madison.
Approximately 400 people are expected to turn out for the “Movie on Main Street” free screening at 5:30 p.m. today.
The city has held the “Movie on Main Street” event annually since 2018.
Amy Cummins, event coordinator for the City of Madison Economic Development Department, said the city chose “The Grinch” this year because they always try to find a fun, family-friendly movie that everyone can enjoy.
“We hope it’s a great start to the holiday season,” Cummins said.
The free movie screening is scheduled to begin around sundown at approximately 5:30 p.m. today near the caboose on the grounds of the Madison Performing Arts Center, officials said.
Main Street will be closed to traffic starting at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 18, from U.S. 51 to Magnolia Street to accommodate the movie night.
In the event of rain, the movie presentation will be moved into the Madison Square Center of the Arts, officials said. The call will happen around 2 p.m. on whether Main Street remains open or closed.
The road from Madison First Baptist Church will remain open for people to enter and exit, said Sgt. Micah Taylor of the Madison Police Department.
Taylor said people attending are asked to park at Madison First Baptist Church and bring their blankets and chairs.
Refreshments for the film include popcorn, drinks, cotton candy from Ice and Vice, and Pizza Shack is also serving pizza. Thrivent Financial sponsors all food and drinks for the event. Attendees can also expect a surprise visit from Santa Claus.
“Main Street will reopen to the traveling public around 9 p.m.,” Taylor said.
