The Barnett Reservoir Foundation has announced it will cancel the annual Fourth of July celebration and delay the fireworks show to a later date.

According to a spokesman for the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, which has held an annual event at Old Trace Park in Ridgeland to coincide with the fireworks display in past years, the district had no choice but to delay the event due to concerns over contributing to the spread of COVID-19.

“The fireworks are presented annually by the Barnett Reservoir Foundation, a private non-profit organization that supports PRVWSD, and promotes the residential, commercial and recreational community that is The Rez,” said Bobby Cleveland, Foundation secretary. “Unfortunately, due to social distancing limitations and the Governor’s executive orders, the Foundation board had little choice but to cancel our annual Independence Celebration and postpone the fireworks show.

“‘Postpone’ is the key word in regards to the fireworks. It is our intention to reschedule the show later this year, which we may or may not tie to another holiday or event.”

The Foundation has moved its annual Smokin’ on The Rez Steak Cookoff and Music Festival back to its original home at Old Trace Park in Ridgeland. That event, set for Aug. 22, has not been cancelled.
