Two Jackson men are in custody in connection to an April 20 shoplifting case in Madison in which a police officer was dragged by the car of a fleeing suspect.

Jerrell Staten, 21, of Jackson, had his initial appearance in Madison Municipal Court on April 22. His bond for the charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer was set at $1,000,000 and his bond for the charge of felony fleeing was set at $100,000.

Madison Police Capt. Kevin Newman said Staten was additionally charged with felony shoplifting in connection with an incident that happened on April 19, the day before he allegedly dragged Madison Police Officer Bryce McCarra.

Staten’s bond for the charge of felony shoplifting was set at $50,000 for a total bond of $1,150,000.

After the initial arrest of Staten, Newman said further investigation led to the arrest of Alex P. Davis, 32, of Jackson, on April 27, also for felony shoplifting which occurred on April 19.

Newman said Davis was not involved in the aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felony fleeing incident the following day. Davis had his initial appearance in Madison Municipal Court on April 29.

His bond for the felony shoplifting charge was set at $100,000.

Both men are currently at the Madison County Detention Center.

Newman said that at 2:54 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, an officer of the Madison Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a 2009 Mazda Tribute van on Mississippi 463 eastbound between the Highland Colony Parkway and I-55.

The vehicle in question was suspected in a previous felony shoplifting incident reported at the Best Buy in Madison.

Newman said that as the officer was interacting with the driver of the vehicle, who would later be identified as Staten, at the driver’s side window and door of the stopped vehicle the driver drove off eastbound onto Mississippi 463 dragging the officer, who would later be identified as McCarra, with the vehicle.

As the vehicle turned south onto the Interstate 55 onramp, the officer was able to free himself from the outside of the fleeing vehicle.

“Other officers arriving on the scene gave aid to the officer while other officers pursued the fleeing vehicle south onto Interstate 55,” Newman said at the time.

As the vehicle reached the 105 mile-marker in Ridgeland it struck the left cement guardrail of the interstate causing two of the pursuing vehicles to interact with the fleeing vehicle, Newman said.

The fleeing vehicle came to a stop in the far-left lane of southbound I-55 at which time the driver was taken into custody.

“There were no other occupants of the fleeing vehicle and other than the two police vehicles, no other vehicles were involved in the traffic crash,” Newman said.

Officers of the Ridgeland Police Department as well as officers of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the accident scene.

Both Staten and McCarra were reportedly transported to the hospital after the accident.

McCarra was recognized on May 5 for his injuries by Warrior of the Badge, a Brookhaven group that recognizes officers injured in the line of duty.
