2 Madison County deputies injured in 90-mile chase

The suspect driving an Italian luxury sedan who led dozens of law enforcement officials in a pursuit that begin in Glukstadt and ended in Grenada last week has been identified and faces multiple charges, the authorities said.

Desmond McKinney, 29, was arrested and charged with felon carrying a concealed weapon, fleeing a law enforcement agency vehicle, aggravated assault, possession of marijuana in a vehicle, careless driving and a motor vehicle violation in the Nov. 10 incident.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Heath Hall said McKinney was arrested in Grenada after being stopped in Gluckstadt and fleeing the scene on the late afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 10. Hall said the investigation is ongoing.

Deputies stopped McKinney for a routine traffic violation at the Fleetway convenience store in Gluckstadt, Hall said, and McKinney would not vacate the vehicle at the request of law enforcement. As he attempted to leave the scene, he hit two deputies, Hall said.

The deputies suffered minor injuries “and are fine,” Hall said.

The deputies then chased the car northbound on I-55 more than 90 miles to Grenada.

Grenada County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Lawrence said they made contact with the suspect vehicle, a black Maserati, sometime after 5:30 or 5:45 p.m., though they were prepared and had been notified of a possible chase incoming as early as 5 p.m.

Hall said Grenada police and sheriff’s deputies stopped the car somewhere in their jurisdiction with spike strips and arrested the suspect. Law enforcement found drugs and one gun in the vehicle, officials said.

Lawrence said they stopped the vehicle around mile marker 206 on I-55 which is right at the Grenada exit. Lawrence said Mckinney faces no charges in their jurisdiction and that he and the vehicle were turned over to the custody of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on the scene.

He said both the vehicle and suspect were transported back to Madison County that evening.

Lawrence said before the whole ordeal was over it probably involved more than 30 law enforcement vehicles from Mississippi Highway Patrol, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and others in addition to units from MCSO, Grenada PD and SO.
