POLICE CHIEF, CITY OF GLUCKSTADT EMPLOYMENT LISTING CLOSING DATE: Open SALARY: Competitive JOB DESCRIPTION DETAILS: The new City of Gluckstadt, incorporated in 2021, is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Police Chief. The chief of police shall be the chief law enforcement officer of the municipality and shall have control and supervision of all police officers employed by said municipality. The employee in this position works independently to direct, plan and manage all functions and operations of the city police department, enforcing all laws and ordinances, crime prevention, and protection of life and property for our citizens. Examples of important responsibilities include, preparation of reports, establishment of operational standards, preparation of budget, development and administration of training programs, community and public engagement, personnel management and public relations matters pertaining to the police department. Additionally, the law requires that the chief of police “shall be an ex officio constable within the boundaries of the municipality, and he shall perform such other duties as shall be required of him by proper ordinance.” The chief of police shall also be the executive officer of the municipal court. The chief of police shall also perform other job responsibilities as required of him by the court, in the line of his duty. The Police Chief receives policy direction from the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, but also provides administrative and technical assistance to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. The candidate is a public servant to the community and shall represent the municipality in a professional manner at all times. The candidate is expected to keep abreast of emerging trends in law enforcement, new legislation, regulations, and policies relevant to the department’s operation and report such findings to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with elected officials, officers of the city, other department heads, the city attorney, representatives of other agencies, other city employees, and the public at large, communicating effectively (orally, written, and electronically). The chief of police will supervise full-time and/or part-time employees and will work regular business hours year-round, with regular overtime and night work, including attendance at board meetings, professional association meetings, trainings, conferences, and community outreach events. This is a full-time permanent position with the City of Gluckstadt; the immediate supervisor for this position is the Mayor. The Police Chief is expected to develop effective methods & routines for accomplishing job responsibilities.
