Northwest Rankin 42, Germantown 7



The Mavericks got off to a rough start this season, losing the opener last Friday to Northwest Rankin 42-7.

Score aside, Germantown led in most aspects of the ballgame. They led in total plays, first downs and had nearly twice the time of possession as Northwest Rankin.

It was big offensive plays that proved to be Germantown’s Achilles heel, with Northwest Rankin scoring on a 62-yard rush, 58-yard pass, and 30-yard pass to name a few. On defense, Northwest Rankin created three turnovers also — two fumbles and an interception — that were the extra nails in the coffin.

Germantown quarterback Colton Gardner finished 9-13 passing for 161 yards, one TD and one interception. Running back Nick Barnes finished with 27 carries for 56 yards. Tre Davis led the receiving corps with two catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Germantown hosts Yazoo County this Friday.



St. Andrew’s 14,

Noxapater 6



The Saints opened the season with a 14-6 victory over Noxapater at home last week.

It was a battle of defenses throughout the night as turnovers were the overall theme.

The Saints recovered four fumbles on the night. Noxapater had three turnovers of its own in the contest.

Senior quarterback Holland Townes finished the night 5-26 passing with 82 yards, one TD and two interceptions. He also had one carry for a touchdown.

St. Andrew’s hosts Riverside this Friday.



St. Joseph 35,

Newton 22



The Bruins won the season opener last week against Newton in decisive fashion.

Senior QB Daniel Clarke led the offense completing 11-18 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior running back London Walker finished with 11 carries for 30 yards and a touchdown.

St. Joe plays Tri-County Academy this Friday.



Ridgeland 38,

Velma Jackson 33



The Titans of Ridgeland High School opened the season last week with a 38-33 win over cross-county opponent Velma Jackson.

Leading the charge for the Titans was sophomore quarterback Zy Mcdonald who completed 27-40 passes for 423 yards and four touchdowns. Markell Young, J.D. Wilkerson, Yamarius Banks and Richard Mays each caught a touchdown pass for the Titans.

Ridgeland plays Northwest Rankin Friday, as Velma Jackson will host rival Canton High School.



Canton 48, Hazlehurst 16



The Tigers of Canton High School came out firing last week, dominating Hazlehurst in all aspects of the game.

Senior running back Camerone Harris led the charge with 20 carries for 134 yards and four touchdowns. Jontarius Brown had six carries for 48 yards and a touchdown and junior quarterback scurried for a five-yard touchdown.

The Tigers on defense recovered one fumble and Rashawn Meeks tallied a 50-yard interception.

Canton travels to rival Velma Jackson this Friday.



Sylva Bay14,

Tri-County 7



The Rebels lost their season opener to Sylva Bay 14-7. Stats for the game were unavailable. Tri-County plays at St. Joe Madison this Friday.



Canton Academy 16,

Clarke Prep 0



The Panthers of Canton Academy silenced their season-opening opponent Clarke Prep 16-0 last Friday.

Junior quarterback Nick Foreman led the offense, completing 3-9 passes for 62 yards and one touchdown. He also had three carries for 28 yards and a touchdown.

Junior running back Cody Coleman finished with 20 carries for 58 yards on the night.

Canton Academy plays Hartfield Academy this week.

East Rankin Academy 0



The Patriots thumped East Rankin to open the season. Stats for the game were unavailable. Jackson Prep hosts Washington School this Friday.
