Even though the heat index was close to 120 degrees, it is safe to say that none of these golfers would be deterred from their appointed 18 hole rounds.  Those were the circumstances surrounding some 212 golfers who tee’d off for the Country Club Of Canton’s 8th Annual Robbie Webb Memorial 4 Ball Tournament in August. The tournament attracted golfers from around the South.

The tournament is designed to highlight the impact Robbie Webb had on the Country Club Of Canton and many of its veteran golfers. Mr. Webb was the Head Pro/GM/Greenskeeper at was originally a 9 hole course. In 1967, he designed and expanded Canton to a beautiful 18-hole course lined with ancient oaks and pines.  He continued with Canton until his retirement in 2006. The Canton Country Club 4 Ball Tournament was started by Mr. Webb in 1975 and was named in his honor after his passing in 2012 at the age 72.  He was a member of the PGA Gulf States Hall Of Fame. Mississippi Sports Hall of Famer and columnist Rick Cleveland often described Webb as the “Godfather of Mississippi Golf”.

The tournament remains one of the more popular golf events in Mississippi thanks in no small way to the sponsorship from Movietown RV & Storage, Mr. Jim Harrell, Canton Academy, Pearl River Resort and Ben Nelson Golf.

Renowned Chef Johnny Stewart of Two Rivers Restaurant and Catering, a landmark eatery in Canton since 1996, prepared a world class prime rib dinner enjoyed by some 275 players and guests on Saturday, Aug. 10.  Players were treated to breakfast and lunch by Jackie’s International Catering of Canton throughout the three day tournament.

The 2019 Champions of the Country Club Of Canton Robbie Webb Memorial 4 Ball Tournament were Aaron Collins and Grant McDonnieal.
