With 15 seconds to go in the game, on fourth down and 8, Madison Central had one more shot to tie last week’s season opener against Brandon.

Down by a touchdown, Jaguars quarterback Jimmy Holiday took the snap and threw it towards the end zone, only for it to be batted down by senior defensive back Jay Stanley.

Brandon won the opener 14-7 following a defensive battle of epic proportions.

With under a minute to go in the second quarter, Madison Central’s Duke Arnold blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to give the Jags a 7-0 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs’ offense remained stagnant until the end of the third quarter when Dallas Smith found a gap and ran one in to tie the game. Then, with seven minutes to go in the fourth, Brandon quarterback Will Rogers connected with Jonathan Mingo for the go-ahead score.

The Jaguars offense struggled throughout the night. Holiday finished 6-17 for 53 yards passing, and 16 carries for 23 yards on the ground. A.J. Williams and Javarius Jordan combined for an additional 17 carries but produced only 28 rushing yards total.

Madison Central (0-1) hosts Ocean Springs (0-1) this Friday.
