James Ray Marlett, 74, of Canton died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. A memorial service was held Tuesday August 12 at Breeland Funeral Home. Born Dec. 16, 1939, in Randolph County, Ark., Jim was the oldest of eight children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burley Lee and Olive Nell (Kerley) Marlett. After graduation from McLean Waynesville High School, Jim joined the army and was in the 101st Airborne Division stationed in Ft Campbell, Ky. He had worked for the Canton Police Department and retired from the Madison County Sheriff's Department. Jim is survived by his wife Judy Phelps Marlett; their two sons, Brian Christopher Marlett (Crystal) of Moore, Okla. and Justin Scott Marlett of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren; brothers, Dennis Marlett (Ramona) of Morton, Ken Marlett (Deb) of Eureka, Ill.; sisters, Janet Holley (Willie) of Moore, OK, Elizabeth Witzig (Ron) of Gilmer, Texas, June Coker of Atlanta, and Sheila Aldridge (Ray) of Blanchard, Okla.; brother, Darrel (Jane) Phelps of Plano, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
