James Lyston Tullos died Feb. 14, 2014. He was 99 years old.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Madison. Interment was in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Magee.

He was preceded in death by: his wife of 63 years, Iola, and his daughter.

Surviving relatives include: daughter, Gloria T. Stroud (Randy) and son-in-law, James Spence; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Earlene Johnson and Gertrude Diamond.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Madison for 34 years. He authored a book of poetry entitled, Poems by a Country Boy, published in 2006. In December 2013, the mayor of Madison named him the Poet Laureate of the city, and Grand Marshall of the Christmas Parade.
