CANTON — Buildings lining the historic downtown Square here are filled with rich history, some dating back over a century.

Next Thursday, individuals will have the opportunity to explore the upstairs of some of these historic buildings during the 2nd Annual Upstairs Downtown.

“Upstairs Downtown is an event designed to draw visitors to mingle with Canton residents for an evening of design discovery, economic development awareness, and promotional success in our charming downtown,” event organizer Mary Carol Patrick said. “It will be an exclusive tour of the square that showcases primarily the upstairs spaces that are rarely accessible to the public.”

Patrick said that while people are drawn to the square for shopping, many of the second-floor spaces are typically closed off to visitors.

“To satisfy the growing curiosity about these mysterious upper rooms we will have this satisfying experience,” Patrick said. “Canton is a prime tourist attraction with opportunities to share our architectural history while promoting businesses and shopping in local stores.”

Upstairs Downtown will also showcase spaces created in renovated historic structures.

Upstairs Downtown can promote the “idea” of revitalizing the spaces that are in need of some TLC by sparking interest with the current owners or drumming up new investors. This will include a variety of spaces that people would be interested in seeing such as living spaces, gallery spaces, office spaces, and even storage areas.

In addition to local citizens, this invitation extends to real estate agents all around the Canton area to give them a better idea of the types of spaces that Canton has to offer. An architect or designer will be available for the event because not everyone is able to visualize the spaces “post-renovation.”

Cocktails and hors-d'oeuvres will be included while listening to local musicians around the square.

Sponsorships are welcomed and the proceeds from this event will go towards beautification projects around the square.

Buildings on the tour this year include The Loft, Trolio Hotel, Canton Elks Lodge, Movie Museum, Dane, The Crosby, Old Madison County Courthouse, Sonny Coco Jazz, Rich Grain Distilling Company and Legends of Mississippi Sports Bar.

Tickets are on sale around the square in retail stores, Canton Tourism office and Canton Garden Club Facebook.

The event is Nov. 1 and lasts from 4-8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Check-in will be at The Trolio Hotel lobby on 137 North Union Street that evening.
