The Ridgeland Police Department is about to undergo a rigorous re-accreditation process from a variety of state law enforcement officials and community and personal input to make sure they are compliant with state standards.

From Nov. 20-21, a team of assessors from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (MSLEAC) will be conducting an on-site assessment at the Ridgeland Police Department, a press release from the investigating body said.

This assessment will be to verify the Department’s compliance with standards established by the state Accreditation Commission. The Department received its initial accreditation in February of 2010.

Moving forward the department is required to demonstrate continued compliance with 116 professional standards to maintain its state accreditation.

Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal could not be reached for comment.

The assessment team will be composed of professionals from Mississippi law enforcement agencies.

The assessors will review agency policies and practices, interview department personnel, and closely examine files compiled by the department over the last three years to demonstrate compliance.

The release says standards cover such topics as “use of force, training, disciplinary procedures, selection process, promotions, career development, patrol, criminal investigation, pursuits, and traffic.” The MSLEAC maintains that adherence to accreditation standards “prompts an agency to strengthen its crime prevention and control capabilities, establish written procedures for essential management functions, maintain fair personnel practices, improve delivery of police services and solidify inter-agency cooperation and coordination.”

During this time the on-site assessment will also ask for agency employees and members of the community to phone in their comments about RPD.

MSLEAC will accept telephone comments on Nov. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Telephone comments will be limited to 10 minutes per caller, and must directly address the Ridgeland Police Department’s ability to comply with MSLEAC standards.

Anyone interested in making written comments about the Ridgeland Police Department’s ability to meet standards required for state accreditation is requested to send correspondence to: Mississippi Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission, ATTN: Accreditation Alliance Manager, 1025 Northpark Dr., Ridgeland, MS 39157.
