A Tuscaloosa man awaits an extradition trial after Ridgeland Police arrested him on Tuesday on a warrant for a murder in Alabama.

Tuscaloosa Police announced Tuesday, July 21, that Eric Markett Hayward, 23, was taken into custody by the Ridgeland Police Department in Mississippi earlier that night.

Ridgeland Police Lieutenant Tony Willridge said that Hayward is in the Madison County Detention Center awaiting an extradition trial being handled by the District Attorney's office. Willridge said that he could not comment further on the incident including the circumstances of Hayward’s arrest.

“I don’t want to get ahead of the investigation in Alabama by releasing any information at this time,” Willridge said.

Tuscaloosa investigators had asked agencies across the region to be on the lookout for Hayward, wanted for murder in the death of Leonna Tucker, 21.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit will continue this ongoing investigation.
